Sunrise at Sunset EP
You may have seen my last post about my first book, All Roads Lead to Dockweiler, that's out now. (If not, please go check it out!) Well, if you've purchased the book, you've seen that it comes with a QR code for a free downloaded of my first full-length album, Golden Coast Summertime. But I also wanted to release something to celebrate the book launch, as well as a build up to the eventual public release of the Golden Coast Summertime LP, and so the week that the book came out I also released the Sunrise at Sunset EP!
This one comes with five songs, three of which are from the upcoming album, one is a remixed version off of the album, and the last is a demo I did with my good friend Alex Barker way back in 2015.
Starting off is an acoustic version of "More Beautiful," which is the first song I ever wrote for my wife way back in 2009. Here is the official music video for the original video:
Next up is "Luna," a song I wrote about the moon that is featured in the Supermoon Surfing chapter of All Roads Lead to Dockweiler. You may have seen a little ukelele version I recorded during a moonrise this summer, which influenced the album version:
After that is an early mix of "Global Warming," a satire I wrote back in 2019 after a particularly rainy season in Los Angeles. It made the city so beautiful with the desert becoming green and flourishing, which beckons the thought that maybe climate change (though of course is wrecking so much of the planet) can also bring about some beauty. Here is a live version I recorded earlier this year:
And then comes the "Clouds" demo that Alex and I recorded back in 2015, when we used to create quite a bit of music together (before each of us moved away from LA the following year). This is a song I actually wrote back in college (so maybe 2006/2007) that stuck around, and which I've performed live a few times. We recorded this demo before I really knew what I was doing in music production, but I love what Alex did vocally and also on trumpet + panflute, so I wanted to share it. "Clouds" also totally fits the beachy vibe of the EP, as well as the book.
Here is a version I recorded in a car while doing my laundry back in 2018/2019, which I totally forgot about and has never been released!
And finally is "Standout," a fun little folk song about a surf break that I actually started writing while surfing, with a song from Hurray for the Riff Raff in my head. Years ago a friend complained to me that surfers shouldn't write songs about surfing, because they tend to be kind of stupid and unrelatable, unless you are a surfer. Whether or not that's true for "Standout," I don't know, but either way it's got a nice melody that you can at least bob your head to, even if you're not bobbing out on the water.
This EP comes after the singles I released earlier this fall, "Golden Coast Summertime" and "Ocean Eyes." As I mentioned, it's all building up to the release of the Golden Coast Summertime album, which you can hear for yourself once you buy the book!
Thanks for reading and/or listening! Stay tuned!
